CCARH: Earworm Submissions

EARWORMs @ CCARH

As part of CCARH's ongoing research into melodic and harmonic analysis, we invite users to contribute short memorable melodic phrases, or "earworms", using the form below. For these purposes, we view an earworm as a monotonic musical phrase or melody that for some reason captures the listener's attention for a prolonged period of time. In short, a melody that sticks in your head and comes back again and again when you least expect it.

Using the form below, enter the musical phrase using any form of melodic transcription with which you are most familiar. On the right can be found descriptions of as well as links to references for various symbolic data formats which researchers and musicians have used in the past for a number of purposes.

Guido

The Guido data-format is a simple and robust data format used as source material for a web-based note-server capable of instantly producing fully-rendered musical notation as a .gif image as well as an sound clip/MIDI file.

MusicXML

MusicXML is an XML-based symbolic representation of musical data. MusicXML can be generated using commercial notation softwares such as Finale or Sibelius and can be edited and read either using basic text-editing software or through standard XML tools.

This submission form requests information regarding both your musical "earworm" phrase as well as personal information about your musical experience level, gender, nationality and language. Please enter as much information as you feel comfortable providing. This demographic information will be used solely to aid in our study of these musical examples and will not in any way be transferred or sold to any entity.
